My best advice would be a Ford crown Vic, although that won't be all that great on the gas mileage front. A good bike. Scooter. Might as well get a moped at that price point. Anything under 2000 doesn't run. Hell scrap price right now is 1500. toyota fucking camry.

If you only had 2,000$ to buy a car what would you get?
If it were me, I'd be looking for $3,000 cars, that I can negotiate down to $2,000. Something Japanese like a Honda or Toyota or mazda, and something with a manual transmission. High mileage with the manual doesn't scare me. 200,000 miles? No big deal. Manual transmissions also have less resale value, which will help you out.

Look for cars that are reliable and more importantly, safe. You can certainly find a car for $4-5k but just understand that at that price it is going to have issues. There are differences between superficial problems and mechanical issues. Body paint faded - probably not a big deal.
