To highlight the variability in pyroxene spectra as a function of Ca 2+ and structure, four transects of roughly constant Fe 2+-Mg 2+ ratio but varying Ca 2+ are shown in Fig. 5. The spectra of synthetic Ca-Free orthopyroxenes from Klima et al. (2007) that lie along each of these transects have also been included in each panel for comparison.

Augite is isomorphous with the minerals Diopside and Hedenbergite. It is an intermediary member between these minerals, forming a series, but contains additional sodium and aluminum within its chemical structure. Strictly speaking, because of the variables in its chemical structure, Augite is really more of a group then a single mineral, but it is still classified a single mineral species by ...

Pyroxene vs. Amphibole — What's the Difference?

Pyroxene has a simpler single-chain structure where silicate tetrahedra share two oxygens. Amphibole, on the other hand, boasts a double-chain structure where the tetrahedra share two or three oxygens, making it more complex. 15. Chemically, Pyroxene and Amphibole show variations. Pyroxenes typically consist of calcium, magnesium, and iron ...
