According to Mr. Emerick, the Huron Bay Quarry Co. and the 300 workers who lived in its attendant shanty town (named Arvon), pulled slate from these pits for about 30 years. They closed down the quarry in the 1890s—right around the same time that the ill-fated "Railroad that Never Ran" was being built.

HISTORIC QUARRIES, GOOSE RIVER, PICNIC, NO TRAIL While no trail currently exists on the property, Simonton Quarry is a lovely place to observe Rockport's historic lime quarries.
